title: Samburu Tribe Welcoming Dance
Date: 2004/2/22

Memo: This local native Samburu tribe welcomes visitors. For a fee to help support them in an ecomonic world, they will allow you to come in, be taken on a tour, be entertained by them and given some history and information on their tribe and lifestyle. The money goes to support medicine and other similiar necessities which is shared with other tribes.
This was really fascinating to see first hand, typical and traditional life in Africa before the the birth of cities. Although they do charge to visit, it has not always been so. They have always welcomed visitors but in more recent years found they could charge to help support certain necessities. They seemed to enjoy the company, welcomed as many photos as you wished to take and offered their crafts for sale as well at the end of the visit.
Although I can seemingly understand a culture wishing to hold on to certain historical roots, I found it remarkably fascinating that even with an opportunity to change their lifestyle, many of these individuals most likely would not. They are solidly and profoundly carved in tradition and have little desire, if any, to upset that heritage. There are many who were born into the modern day tribes that do leave, but a strong number who do not.
