chromolithograph
Inscribed along the top Supplement to the Illustrated London News October 27 1860 ; titled below the image and further inscribed
From a Drawing by our Special Artist, G.H. Andrews
image size: 11 x 17 ½ in.
George Henry Andrews was a distinguished watercolorist, during an era which knew so many great artists in the medium. However, he was
also eminent for the compositions he created to be copied in wood-engraving for The Illustrated London News, an illustrated periodical,
similar to the American Harper's, which had a huge circulation and brought Andrews a much wider popularity than he could have
achieved through his exhibited watercolors.
The present work, a rare and early example of commercial color lithography, was a special supplement to the October, 27, 1860 issue. This is shortly after the publication of the chromolithograph of Frederic E. Church's painting of Niagara Falls, which was completed and exhibited a couple of years earlier.
The sheet has its original vertical centerfold, plus some creases in the side margins, as well as marginal tears; some of the tears,
and part of the centerfold, consolidated with archival tape on the reverse. The surface has stains and surface dirt.
Price: $250
