Indianapolis Museum of Art exhibition featuring the landscape architecture of seven significant
country estates in the United States, A Genius for Place: American Landscapes of the Country Place Era explores landscape and garden design
as important works of art. The exhibition's 70 black-and-white photographs and seven color Iris prints—by award-winning landscape photographer Carol
Betsch—illustrate the artistic achievements of the landscape architects who created them.
During the period known as the American Country Place Era (about 1890 to 1940), wealthy Americans built grand country retreats in settings of great
natural beauty to escape the noise and pollution of the cities. Though most of these country place landscapes have disappeared, those featured in
A Genius for Place have been carefully preserved.
