Ida Kohlmeyer, within a fifty year career as a painter, has become a New Orleans institution, much like Mardi Gras itself. Her work is not only prominent among collectors and museums around the country, it proudly surrounds the New Orleans community with several examples of grandiose sculptures of abstract shapes and forms. These works are monumental, three-dimensional apparitions of her paintings and their public display not only highlights the festive New Orleans milieu but is enjoyed by all who come and go there.

The development of American clay is relatively undocumented but consists of a rich and intriguing history while obtaining international recognition as an important art form during the 20th century. It is a medium which is described in as many ways as it is created. Clay is expressive, earthy, and immediate. It can be elusive, liquid, and fragile. It con be flexible, scientific and technical. It can be earthenware, stoneware, porcelain, low-fire, high-fire, hand-built, wheel-thrown, modeled, and molded. It can be gas-fired, woodfired, raku-fired, salt-fired and be finished with endless classifications of glazing. Each result contributes to a particular quality within an individual work, as well as the type of clay it represents.
